The mailhost file is used by the Microsoft MSN Explorer program. MSN Explorer is a web browser that is very similar to Microsoft's Internet Explorer, except that MSN Explorer integrates several features of MSN and Windows Live, such as Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger. Versions 6 and above were included with the Windows XP operating system and Version 7 can be downloaded for those who don't have an MSN service provider. MSN Explorer was formerly available for free, but as of Version 9, those who wish to use MSN Explorer now have to pay for a subscription to use the software, plus have a Windows Live ID. A Windows Live ID is essentially a single account that allows the user to log into and use several websites and applications. Windows Live Hotmail, MSNBC, and the .NET Messenger Service are only a few out of many sites and web-based applications that use the Windows Live ID service. Other companies that are affiliated with Microsoft also use the Windows Live ID service.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

The file extension itself is used by MSN Explorer to store user preferences for the e-mail server used by MSN. This file extension comes into play when a user decides to use the MSN interface in order to check their e-mail instead of going through the usual web interface that those who do not have MSN Explorer and have their own web browsers have to use. A file that uses the extension mailhost will usually appear as "MSN9.mailhost". The number that appears within the file name will usually be named in accordance to the version of the MSN Explorer software. For example, if the MSN Explorer version is Version 7, then the file will appear as "MSN7.mailhost". This file extension is a proprietary Microsoft format and it is also an essential component of MSN Explorer. Otherwise, the program will fail to function as intended. In the event that the mailhost file is missing or corrupt, the MSN Explorer program will display an error regarding said file.

More Info Regarding File Extension Mailhost
The most common problem for MSN Explorer is the inability to retrieve and view emails, as well as receiving problem messages connected to the mailhost file. This usually happens because the file is that the dynamic link library files used for MSN can be accidentally de-registered, usually for a variety of reasons. A common cause of this phenomenon is usually a registry cleaning program that incorrectly flags dynamic link library files for deletion from the registry. This essentially de-registers files associated with MSN Explorer, leading to the above problems that users of MSN Explorer may run into.
In order to solve this problem, the dynamic link library files associated with mailhost must be re-registered with the MSN Explorer program. This process is relatively simple and will only take a small period of time to perform for a user who has good working knowledge of the Microsoft Windows operating system.
1) Locate and click on the Start menu button. When the menu appears, click on the entry that is marked "Run".
2) A dialog box will appear that says "Run". Inside of the dialog box, type the following line: "regsvr32 c:progra~1msnmsncorefilesmailui.dll". For better accuracy, cut and paste the line into the dialog box.
3) Either press the Enter key on your keyboard or click OK.
This procedure will re-register the mailui.dll file that is associated with mailhost and return the MSN Explorer program back to full functionality. In the event that the program is installed in a location other than the above given, substitute the following for the path that the installation is located: "c:progra~1msnmsncorefiles". The above solution will also work for the corresponding downloadhost file that is also involved in the retrieval and reading of emails on the MSN Explorer program. The only difference is that the dynamic link library file name is slightly different. In this case, "regsvr32 c:progra~1msnmsncorefilesmsnmetal.dll" should be typed or pasted into the dialog box when prompted.
